About the Artwork

Entitled Butterflies of Singapore: Metamorphosis, a graceful oil painting of gossamer winged butterflies was delicately captured on the Büffel by Jacklyn Gratzfeld. Although butterflies may not be quite what the viewer would expect to see on the skin of a robust and powerful creature such as the bull, they both signify the fragility of life and how unpredictable it can be. Gratzfeld was inspired to create this by an encounter she had with a special needs child a long time ago, whose growth and progress she was able to witness. As with so many things in Nature that is unexplainable, for Gratzfeld to have been able to see the child flourish over the years like the butterfly, was truly a wonderment.

About the Artist

Originally from New York, American artist Jacklyn Gratzfeld graduated from Clarkson University with a BA in Chemical Engineering in 1983. Her Engineering job took her to Germany in 1990 where she remained for over 20 years. Despite her busy career Gratzfeld had always been drawing, painting and creating ever since she was a child. Her love for nature and animals also stems from her childhood, where she spent many summers in the countryside. In 2003 she began studying art literature, namely lithography, oil painting and nude figure drawing and received proper training from various American and German artists. Gratzfeld started focusing on creating art to support the preservation of nature in Southeast Asia in 2010. She creates and celebrates beauty and emotion and "gives a voice to the part of nature that cannot speak".

In 2013 Gratzfeld established the Singapore based company Art is Wild (www.artiswild.com). Art is Wild is responsible for the exhibition and sale of her art and for various projects supporting nature conservation and animal rights projects. Parallel to the displays of her artwork Gratzfeld composes and gives entertaining photo presentations on the themes represented in her artwork for adults and children, and children's workshops. She is an artist member of the Southern Palatinate Art Guild in Germany and View Arts, the Art Society of Old Forge, New York. Gratzfeld has been a keen exhibitor since 2006 and has held solo and group exhibitions in the USA, France and Germany.
