About the Artwork

"Alex the bull is the strongest and the toughest of all bulls" explains very special artist Jacob Tan Leung Chung who is autistic. Much like the artist himself, "He is an unstoppable Titan" says Tan. That is the impression the viewer would certainly get from looking at Alex the Dark Bull. Using oils, the artist has painted a tough and quite austere looking bull, with piercing red eyes and dark grey and black plates of armour as the hide of the animal. Resembling rather like the exterior of an armadillo, Tan's Büffel is reminiscent of a prehistoric creature from the era of the dinosaurs. With such a thick skin, it would seem like nothing can penetrate the bull, or hold him back, much like the artist, despite the obstacles life puts in his way.

About the Artist

Disability: Mild Intellectual Disability

Jacob Tan has always been dabbling with art since he was a young boy. Starting with Playdoh modelled dinosaurs; he went on to create toys out of toilet rolls, boxes and tapes. Creating such pieces was his form of expression. His natural ability to bring colours together is clearly shown in his drawings. Tan's drawings attracted attention to him. Receiving good reviews spurs him on and it improves his ability and confidence to communicate and engage others in conversations.

Besides art, Tan like a typical boy loves his computer games. The games showed him the fantasy world within which he bases many of his drawings on. Lego has always been his passion and his creations filled the house.
