About the Artwork

Theresa Tan's Büffel is a tribute to the 1936 children's book, Ferdinand The Bull by Munro Leaf. Ferdinand is a prize bull but he doesn't like bullfighting. Instead he prefers to sit and smell the flowers. Book commentators later suggested Ferdinand The Bull was a statement against the Spanish Civil War that year. Spectacularly decked out and proudly titled Ferdinand Does Fashion, this peace-loving bull has been transposed into the world of sparkle and glitz, bringing it forth to become a bull of 2014. He wears a coat of milk chocolate brown, with horns and a tail gilded in gold. Mosaic swathes of bronze, gold, tourmaline, and peridot-styled stones are "tattooed" across his thigh and head, while gold matte sequins in a converse pattern counter the colours with a sheath of glamour-armour. His Swarovski-crystal eyes sparkle like a troubadour's; his nostrils flare with passion. Ferdinand Does Fashion is a symbol of peace in strength; of beauty in every beast.

Materials used includes spray paint in Brown and Red-Gold, acrylic coloured stones, Gold matte sequins and Swarovski crystals for the eyes and nose.

About the Artist

Born and bred in Singapore, the remarkably talented Theresa Tan is a writer, editor, screenwriter and a playwright with over 20 years of creative editorial experience. Tan's foray into writing began at the age of 19 when she won first prize at the National Short Play Competition in 1987 with her play Pistachios and Whipped Cream. Dirty Laundry has been adapted into a television movie, and four other plays have been performed on stage. After her internship at The Straits Times, Tan became a copywriter for a season, before joining 8 Days magazine as an arts correspondent. In 1997, she became the Editor of Female magazine and was later headhunted for the position of Editor-In-Chief for ELLE Singapore. After a brief hiatus, Tan returned to the wild world of magazines as Editor for Tiger Tales, the inflight magazine of Tiger Airways. She subsequently joined the brilliant but short-lived Vanilla magazine (MediaCorp) as Editor.

Tan co-founded WORD Agency in 2006, a writing and editing services business whose client portfolio includes companies like Mapletree, Diageo and the National University of Singapore. She also serves as District Councillor with Southwest CDC and is a Committee Member of WEWorkz. A breast cancer survivor, Theresa is the author of A Clean Breast (2013), a book about her cancer experience.
