About the Artwork

Home grown multi award-winning Alfie Leong is a fashion designer and founder of fashion labels A.W.O.L. (which stands for All Walks of Life) and mu Apparel. Leong gracefully accepted to participate in the Büffel Art Project's charity auction, whereby he was able to unleash his designer flare and dress a bull for the auspicious occasion. Taken from the A.W.O.L Winter collection, Leong chose to create a Winter hooded jacket for the Büffel aptly named AWOL, a hoodie being one of the designer's favourite items of clothing to wear when relaxing and dressing down. "I love this printed fabric from A.W.O.L. which is colourful and happy" states Leong, who used the same fabric to construct the bull's outfit that physically has a pullover hood, as he says it "represents happiness and warmth".

About the Artist

Alfie Leong's illustrious career in design started as early as 1993 when he was Chief Designer for Basic Black Pte Ltd. In 1994 he was a finalist in the Young Designer Fashion Contest and in 1995 he was the first runner-up of the Asia Designer Awards and Winner of the Singapore Fashion Designer Contest. That same year, Leong also gained a scholarship to the Raffles Lasalle International School of Design. In 2001 he was nominated as one of the top 5 labels at the Singapore Fashion Awards. Leong's most recent great achievement was being presented with Designer of the Year for the President's Award 2013. Before establishing A.W.O.L and Mu, Leong had experience setting up other labels such as Capsule in Isetan in 1996 and Flag in 1999. Other than designing his own line of clothes, Leong has been a judge for the Smirnoff International Contest, collaborated with Swatch Singapore to create outfits for the Swatch Spring/Summer 2003 launch, and in 2004 he was invited to the first Mercedes Fashion Festival Mentorship program and show for the final presentation.

He has participated in numerous fashion shows in Singapore, Seoul and Beijing and has successfully launched A.W.O.L internationally. Knowing how hard it is to get a foot in to the highly competitive industry Leong embarked on Workshop Element in 2012, an umbrella label consisting of a host of local amateur, emerging and established designers to provide them with an outlet to share, corroborate and showcase their work in a curated space. Wanting to give back to the community the fruits of his success, Leong explains "I always wanted to set up a platform for young and veteran Singaporean creatives, curators and designers to come together to learn and to cross-pollinate ideas, and, at the same time, provide a physical space for them to showcase their products". He states "It might function like a department store but each designer and curator actually has the creative freedom to decorate and curate his or her own space."
