About the Artwork

Working mostly in oil on canvas or acrylic on paper, Valerie Ng's paintings are an abstract expressionist style. They are created as a result of her explorations in colour, light, depth, form and texture, as well as inspired by the natural elements, hues and shapes in the environment. Ng strives for a dynamic balance with a sense of mood and movement on the surface, through a unique transfer of energy in the action of painting. Having a keen interest in paper, her artwork includes artists' books, papier-mache, collage and assemblage. Following her interest in nature, Ng chose the elements of wood and earth as the colour base for her Büffel given the "Braun" brand's name. Entitled Braun Streaks the artist intended to create movement on the surface, and the marks actually follow a forward and upward angle of the buffalo, building layers and textures with varying hues and painterly gestures, whilst depicting the streaks in motion of the bull and simulating the organic texture and feel of the leather goods.
