About the Artwork

Alpana Vij's inspiration for the Büffel comes from the enlightened poet Khalil Gibran and his uplifting words, "I existed from all eternity and, behold, I am here; and I shall exist till the end of time, for my being has no end." As the artist started to consider designing her Büffel entitled I am, she claims that "Words flowed, pictures formed and disparate forms came together into a new whole as I sought to translate these beautiful words by the poet, Khalil Gibran, into images". Vij's literary interpretation of creating the Büffel is an esoteric manifestation of Gibran's poetry, "The bull, a symbol of the connection between man and nature in many ancient cultures, seemed the perfect receptacle for these words that describe the unchanging, eternal nature of the soul. It was as if the Büffel was being imbued with an energy of its own?an energy that it would take into the world".
